If your acne isn't responding to the lotions and potions you're slathering on, you might want to take a good look at your cleanser. "Cleansers that leave your skin feeling 'squeaky clean' are actually creating an acid mantle that is too acidic," says esthetician Athena Hewett. This imbalance may make your skin more prone to increased sebum production and acne.
That's where oil cleansers come in. "[They] don't change the acid mantle at all," she notes. To learn more about how to use oil cleansers for acne, we tapped Hewett for her advice and product recommendations.

FAQ
Is oil cleanser good for acne prone or oily skin?
A common misconception about oil cleansers is that they aren't good for oily skin, but Dr. Zeichner says it's actually kind of opposite. "In fact," he says, "one can argue that an oil cleanser is even more effective for people with oily skin then in those who have dry skin, since oil dissolves oil."
Is oil cleanser better than face wash?
Oil cleanser isn't considered "better" than a typical water-based face wash, it just depends on your skin type and skin goals. A way to combine both would be in double cleansing where, Zeichner says, "the first step is to use an oil cleanser to remove heavy soiling and make up, followed by a water-based cleanser to finish the job."
