Can You Bring A Razor In Your Carry On?

Yes; you are allowed to bring disposable razors on a plane in your carry-on luggage. They are not considered dangerous objects, and you can bring as many as you need.

This includes:

  • Brands such as Gillette, Wilkinson Sword, Bic’s, Harry’s
  • Leg Razors
  • Disposable Razors
  • Unopened Razors

However, you can’t just throw it into your carry-on and be on your way.

Even though there is no strict rule regarding how your disposable razor is packaged, there are some guidelines you should follow. For one thing, it is preferable that you pack it in plastic, a see-through quart-size bag that all your other toiletries are packed in. Another thing to keep in mind is that TSA instructs all travelers to ensure that their razors are packed safely so that an agent won’t cut themselves while inspecting your carry-on.

This means leaving the plastic cap on it. And if you lost that, then wrap the razor in something, so that they don’t confiscate it.

The downside to this is that you are going to have to buy a pack of about 10 razors, just to be able to use one of them. And if you don’t use disposable razors when you shave, then this is pretty much a waste of money. So, I suggest you skip to the section about TSA toiletry bags – they come with razors and they are an awesome time-saver.

One more thing – this also applies to razors with disposable cartridges. You are allowed to have them in your carry-on, provided that they are packaged safely!

Can You Bring a Gillette Razor on an Airplane?

Yes, you can certainly bring a Gillette Razor on a plane as long as it is packaged appropriately.

  • in a see-through plastic bag (quart size) with your toiletries
  • safely packaged so the blades can’t cut anyone

Can You Bring An Electric Razor On A Plane?

Yes, you can bring electric razors on a plane in your carry-on.

This includes:

  • electric eyebrow razors
  • electric beard trimmers

But you do need to take some precautions. For one thing, you need to make sure that the razor is completely turned off, and that there is no way it can accidentally turn on during the flight. If there is a safety stop on it, make sure that it’s turned on.

In addition to that, you will also want to protect the head of the razor. This is more for your sake than for the sake of the TSA; you do not want the head of your razor getting damaged in transit. Just put the plastic cap on it, and you’re good to go.

If your electric razor is not cordless, make sure to wrap the cord tightly around it. On the other hand, if you have a cordless electric razor, then you need to be careful when packing batteries. The best option is to pack them inside the razor itself – provided that you can ensure it won’t turn on in transit.

TSA actually recommends that you wrap the batteries individually before you put them in your carry-on. And keep in mind that there are certain types of batteries that you are not allowed to bring in your carry on. But this mostly applies to spare batteries – as long as they are inside your razor, there shouldn’t be any issues.

Straight And Safety Razors Are A No-Go

If you prefer the precision and clean cut of a straight razor, I’m sorry to disappoint you. They are strictly banned and I think it’s obvious why. You can, however, bring them in a checked bag – so, if you’re traveling with two suitcases there’s always that option.

And luckily, they are pretty cheap so you can always buy them when you arrive at your destination.

The same goes for safety razors – even though this doesn’t make as much sense as straight razors. But, the blades in safety razors are really easy to take out, which makes them a dangerous sharp object. And those are strictly forbidden in carry-ons.

But, pack it in your checked suitcase and you’ll be fine.

In addition to this, keep in mind that pretty much anything with a blade (box cutters, utility knives) is not allowed in your carry-on. You can pack nail clippers and scissors, as long as their blades are shorter than 4 inches.

3-1-1 Rule For Shaving Cream

TSA’s 3-1-1 rule applies to all types of liquids, which includes shaving gel/foam. Basically, you are allowed to have it in your carry on, as long as its amount does not exceed 3.4 ounces – just like with toothpaste. Additionally, the container for your shaving cream can be 3.4 ounces max, and not just the liquid itself. This basically means that you can’t bring 2 ounces of shaving cream in a 9-ounce container.

And, keep in mind that you will have to put the shaving gel in a see-through plastic bag, if you want to get through TSA checkpoints quickly.

You have two good options for packing your shaving cream. The first one is to buy a travel-sized gel and just throw it in your plastic bag. You can get these anywhere, and even on Amazon – if you prefer to do all of your shopping online. Here are some good and inexpensive options:

One more thing – the 3.4 ounce rule also applies to aftershave balm. If you don’t want your aftershave balm to be confiscated at a TSA checkpoint, you should get a travel-sized one. Like these:

The other thing you could do is get a TSA liquid containers travel kit. This is what I personally do, as it is much more convenient. You get a see-through plastic bag for your toiletries, and just enough travel-sized containers to pack everything you need.

Plus, this is definitely the more affordable option in the long run – instead of buying mini versions of your favorite products whenever you have to board a plane, you can just refill these containers with the stuff you already have at home. And this is definitely the better option if you are using any medically-prescribed gels or face creams.

In general, you won’t be able to fit more than four 3.4 ounce containers in the plastic bag. You could try, but it’s better not to risk it – TSA agents always have the final say, and if they see that your carry-on mostly consists of toiletries, they will probably confiscate it. This also means that you need to decide exactly which items you want to bring.

Consider using smaller (twist off) containers for stuff you don’t need a lot of. You are only going to use a few drops of aftershave, and there’s really no need to bring the whole 3.4 ounces of it.

TSA Compliant Toiletry Sets

If you don’t have the time or the energy to buy travel-sized toiletries and plastic bags, there is one awesome option. Get a men’s compliant TSA toiletry kit – pretty much all of them will come with a disposable razor, and all the other necessities you’ll need on your trip.

Plus, they come in the TSA-compliant amounts and containers, and all that’s left for you is to just throw it in your carry-on. And you can even find a few women’s sets that include a razor!

Here are a few TSA compliant toiletry sets that you can get (which include razors!):

None Of This Applies To Checked Baggage!

You’d be surprised how many people forget this. If you are bringing along a checked suitcase, then feel free to pack whatever you want inside it. Straight razors, safety razors, a gallon of shaving cream – it’s all fair game. You prefer to shave with a samurai sword? Not going to be an issue, as long as you check it. :>
