HEATHER THOMAS-FELTON Herald Staff Writer BRADENTON Dr. Claire Ryder Warhola, called "God's Cook" for her volunteer work as founder and director of the Our Daily Bread soup kitchen and shelter, died Sunday in Bradenton Hospice House. She was 79. "She was just a unique human being," said Pat Stenberg, former board president for Our Daily Bread.

"She was a strong woman who was decades ahead of her time and she was so until she left us." Dr. Warhola started Our Daily Bread through Sacred Heart Catholic Church 15 years ago after retiring from several other careers. She volunteered full-time with the not-for-profit organization that provides food to Manatee County's poor and homeless. After 15 years of service to Our Daily Bread, Dr. Warhola announced earlier this year she would retire in May to allow time for travel.

She planned a September trip to Assisi, Italy, but in April, just before her retirement, Dr. Warhola was diagnosed with cancer, said Martha Etzell, a friend of 15 years. "She was happy, she loved life," Etzell said. "She was excited to retire. Her volunteer time was a full-time job." CHAPEL FROM PAGE 1 nothing more critical in a young person's life than high school and to get focused on academics," said Sarasota businessman Vern Buchanan, who is chairman of the capital campaign.

The capital campaign will fund new classrooms, expand the computer center, rewire the entire school with state-of-the-art telecommunications, build a performing arts wing and renovate existing buildings. "The importance of the capital drive to Cardinal Mooney High School is apparent when we consider what an influence this campaign can have on our school and community. A successful campaign will have a transforming affect on Mooney," said Buchanan, adding that almost all of the $5 RIVIERA FROM PAGE 1 about five years, will add 12,000 trips a day on those roads. "That's an awful lot of traffic," he said. Grimes and City Planner Margaret Tusing said the proposed development order addresses traffic.

As the project is built, the developer will be required to make improvements to nearby roads to handle the increased traffic, they said. Councilwoman Tamara Cornwell had concerns about plans to turn a former gravel pit into a harbor with two access points to the Manatee River. She said she was GROWTH FROM PAGE 1 Mike Limoge, project manager with the Manatee County Project Management department, said money will be used to widen a onehalf mile stretch of Upper Manatee River Road from 15 feet to 22 feet. Rodgers plans to begin construction of Grey Hawk Landing in April. Construction is expected to take five years, but Rodgers said residents could begin moving in next fall.

After graduating cum laude from Radcliff College and magna cum laude from Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Warhola earned a doctorate in public health and graduated cum laude from Harvard University, Etzell said.

She also was granted an honorary degree from Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She went on to become a lecturer at Harvard and established the first Teaching, Research and Community Service Unit of its kind there, Etzell said. She also worked as captain of the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington, D.C., for 23 years. For her dedication, she was given the Meritorious Award from the U.S.

Department of Health, Education and Welfare and the Elizabeth Blackwell Award for her contributions to women in million has been raised. Monday's ground-breaking brought excitement to the campus because it was the first physical sign of the campaign. "This will allow us to gather an entire class, such as the freshmen class, and hold just religious services," Principal Steve Christie said. The school does not have a formal chapel and uses the old gymnasium for religious services. Prior to the morning groundbreaking ceremony, Bishop John Nevins held Mass for the 600 students.

About 20-25 percent of the students are from Manatee County. Cardinal Mooney High School, 4171 Fruitville Road, is the only Catholic high school in the Manatee-Sarasota area. The chapel will be built by W.G. Mills Inc. The architect was Sarasota's William Halstead of Halstead Architects.
