13 OCTOBER 2019 FASA Board Meeting
Present: Akers, Baxter, Birnbaum, Christensen, Dahlgren, Gaubatz, Goyette, Harris, Horn, Jordan, Spears
Meeting called to order by President Deborah Harris at 1300 at the studio of Jean Dahlgren, 240 E. Huisache.
Minutes of 9 SEP 2019 Board meeting were electronically transmitted. Motion to approve minutes made by Jean Dahlgren & seconded by Carmen Goyette. Motion carried.
Officer & Committee Reports
1st Vice Pres- Phyllis Jordan (Programs) –
a. Cobweb sale- 21 persons paid $10.00 each for a table. There will be 3 “free” tables for donations. A receptacle will be placed on each table for donations. Sales will begin at 0930. Vendors have been enjoined NOT to sell prior to this time. The sale will continue until 1015 at which time vendors will cover their tables. Sales will be suspended during the business meeting & resume after business meeting is adjourned. It was noted that several non-members signed up for a table. Peggy will contact them during the meeting and ask them to pay dues. (Note: In the past, this has been handled by simply charging non-members an additional $5.00 for their table).
b. January 2020: Sherry Christensen – “The Power of Positive Thinking”. Contract pending.
c. February 2020: Susie Monday – “How to Design on your iPad.” Free make and take.
$15.00 charge for memory stick.
d. Nov. 2019- Jody Alexander. FASA paid SSA $292.21 for half of her airfare and 10 NOV 2019 hotel accommodations.
e. March 2020- Mary McCauley- information regarding sign up has been given to webmaster. Registration will be open as soon as the webmaster posts it.
2nd Vice Pres- Connie Akers (Annual Show)-
Cost: Juror’s Fee – $500; Prizes – $1000 Summary of event: The Opening was well attended; approximately 75-100. Many positive comments were made by attendees. The University had hung the show and supplied refreshments. Threads of Magic, 45th Annual Juried FASA Exhibition October 11 to November 15, 2019, at University of the Incarnate Word.
Juror: Sue Benner .135 pieces entered 62 accepted 73 not accepted 1 piece withdrawn (Sherry Searcy). 2(3) pieces from curators/juror added 57 Artists entered 49 Artists accepted 13 artists had two pieces accepted. 8 Artists not accepted.
Awards: Miki Rodriquez – PROTEST – 1st Place – $300
Casey Galloway – PATTERN IN THE PATH – 2nd Place – $200
Carol Larson – CULTURE OF FEAR – 3rd Place – $100
Kim Paxson – SHAKE UP IN THE LAND OF OZ- FASA Member Award of Excellence – $100 Jean Mau – INNER CIRCE – Kathy Furukawa Beading Award – $100
Ida De La Rosa Ellis – CINA FINA DANCE – Kathy Furukawa Mixed Media Award – $100 Debbie Snider – Merging Water – Juror’s Choice Award – $100
Prize winners who were not present have been notified.
Due to inclement weather, Sue’s plane from Dallas was canceled and she arrived at the gallery at 1700. A piece by Laura Robert was broken and the UIW put a red dot on it and bought it. A piece by Sherry Christensen was also sold. Deb asked that signage include the geographic location of the artist. It was suggested that letters be sent to non-members who were juried in, congratulating them and inviting them to join FASA. 4 of the 7 prize winners were from OOT. It was noted that there had been no social media promotion of the opening during the week of 7 October. UIW asked us for a business list to include in their postcard mailing. It was noted that FASA has no such list.
3rd Vice-Pres. J’cil Horn (Fundraising). Post cards have been printed and distributed. Caterer has been selected. Anthony Ryan of Project Runway will be special guest speaker and also present an original design.
8 garment renderings have been submitted. Deadline is 14 OCT 2019.
Nine additional volunteers are required to adopt and decorate a table.
4th Vice-Pres. Mary Frances Spears (Scholarships) – No report.
Newsletter Editor- Lyn Belisle – Newsletter mailed out Saturday 28 SEP 2019 at 1647 hours. 38.9% Open Rate.
Treasurer- Anne Winsett– 2019-2020 Deb sent out copy of Budget to all Board members on 7 OCT 2019. Budget will be posted to website. The budget in its current form was discussed. Board members were asked to disregard the variance column.
SPUTNIK line item shall be re-titled as SATELLITE.
Garden Center membership line item will be increased to $100.00 to cover FASA’s mandatory annual hosting of one Garden Center function.
It was mentioned that a committee should be formed to discuss the possibility of contracting with professional web designer. Such actions would have to be funded in the next fiscal year and discussion thereof is not relevant to adopting the 2019-2020 budget.
It was moved by Jean Dahlgren that FASA accept the 2019-2020 budget submitted on 7 OCT 2019 with the recommended changes. Seconded by J’cil Horn. Motion carried unanimously. The budget will now go to the full membership for a final vote.
Publicity- Bonnie Davis– No report.
Email tree- (outgoing) Laurie Brainerd-
1) The Band app testing resulted in some, but not all posts getting transmitted as emails, which I believe is a critical component for it to be a substitute for the current process. Thank you to everyone who helped with the testing process.
2) Necessary Passwords, which were hard to track down –
NOTE: This section was not posted. To see it please see FASA secretary.
3) One idea to help the email tree workload is to have more people doing it and split the days. Also, the managing of the list could potentially be another person.
4) As a resigned board member, please remove me from general distribution.
Email tree position is currently vacant.
Community Service- Shirley Moehring– REPORT????
Nettie Birnbaum- Hospitality– No report.
Sherrie Christensen- Education– tour of Vicki Siptak Studio will take place on 24 OCT.
Peggy Baxter- Membership – 9 SEP 2019= 52 attendees; 16 present at SPUTNIK. 135 paid members. 2 new members. 5 guests. 4 persons paid via PAYPAL. Will request $30.53 reimbursement for copies for FASA info fliers distributed at Blingfest. Mailed 9 welcome packets with friendship letter at cost of $1.45 each for new members who do not attend meetings. Received $210.00 in dues and $5.00 in donations. Membership directories will be printed after OCT.
SPUTNIK – Carment Goyette– for complete minutes of 8 SEP 2019 meeting, please refer to FASA OCT newsletter, which was sent out on 9/28/19.
Jean Dahlgren- SAY SI– it is currently unknown whether FASA will be able to hold the 2020 Annual Show at SAY SI due to renovation of their new building and relocation therein.
Jean will touch basis in January for sitrep. Jean will transport Small Scale entries to SAY SI on 10/14/19.
