Artist Statement:  Bodies on a slave ship. The dark holding the living; the light water surrounding the dead. Cotton fabrics layers left unfinished to convey the rawness of separation and death.  Words in English, Swahili and Zulu with Adinkra symbols representing what and who were lost. The chain symbolizing bondage.

Techniques and Materials: The entire piece is hand sewn with cotton fabric hand dyed with indigo and assembled with additional cotton fabric and batting. The piece is hand embroidered with cotton embroidery thread. The eyes consist of glass beads attached with polyester thread.  The metal chain is attached with cotton embroidery thread.
