Chapter 1: Origins

Chapter Text

ORIGINS

A normal girl with a normal life

• In Paris, France, a 16 year old girl named Marinette Dupain-Cheng has finished another session with her therapist Catherine de la Mer. She had a bad year behind her, due to being bullied. It has left her with severe anxiety and obsessive compulsions. But at this point, she is at least more or less ready for the new school year.

• She arrives back home to her parents Tom Dupain and Sabine Cheng. They owe the bakery/Chinese takeout Dupain-Cheng Catering.

• Marinette hasn’t been able to design or craft since last school year. She tries to pick up a pen again, but she can’t come up with anything and puts it down, sighing sadly.

Gilded Cage

• Agreste Mansion, home to the famous fashion designer Gabriel Agreste. His son Adrien, whose mother have been missing for a few years, has been isolated by his overprotective father and only let out for the capacity in terms of his work as a teenage model.

• Young Adrien has finished his therapy session with Catherine de la Mer. De la Mer has a talk with Gabriel, or rather with a tablet with Gabriel of video call, with his assistant Nathalie Sancoeur holding it.

• Catherine says Adrien needs to socialize and a chance to be an actual teenager. He also needs a comforting presence. Gabriel initially refuses, until Catherine points out that if Adrien doesn’t get a chance to grow he’ll never know how to function in the real world.

• Nathalie comforts Adrien the best she can even if she can’t go against Gabriel’s orders. She does talk to Gabriel afterwards about Adrien’s well-being. Gabriel says once Emilie is back, it'll be a thing of the past. Nathalie points out things will get dangerous and he already lost a mother. If Adrien loses him, there is no way he’ll recover. Gabriel says that is the incentive NOTto fail.

• Adrien takes out a phone and calls his friend, promising he’ll be there tomorrow.

A new day

• Marinette is ready to start her first day of the new school year. Her parents offer support and ask if she’s all right. Marinette says she’ll be fine.

• Adrien sneaks out of the mansion and is ready to go to school.

• Gabriel Agreste goes into a secret underground room under the mansion. He takes out a brooch, and a creature called Nooroo appears. Nooroo says that he doesn’t have to go through with his plan. The Miraculous isn’t supposed to be used like he plans to. Gabriel doesn’t listen and says ‘Nooroo, dark wings rise!’ as he transforms into the supervillain Hawkmoth.

• Wang Fu, an elderly Asian man whom runs a massage parlor, is spoken to by Wayzz, a turtle-themed being whom appears to be of the same species as Nooroo. He senses that the Butterfly Miraculous is activated and used for evil means. Master Fu wants to transform, but he is too old. He needs to bring out the Ladybug and the Black Cat Miraculous.

• Fu opens a gramophone, inside a box. He takes out two ladybug-themed earrings and a black cat-themed ring. Out come two more of Nooroo and Wayzz’s species, Tikki and Plagg. They are asked to seek out two worthy wielders.

• As the two set out, we see Marinette and Adrien helping a few people on their way to school. Tikki and Plagg oversee this, can sense they would make a good fit.

• Marinette makes it to school, but Adrien is found out and picked up by Nathalie and the Agreste bodyguard nicknamed ‘the Gorilla’. Adrien begs to be let into school, but Nathalie has her orders, despite feeling for Adrien. She apologizes and takes him back home.

School starts

• Marinette arrives at her school, the College Francois Dupont, and meets up with her best friend since childhood Alya. Alya asks how she is, but Marinette assures she’s better. Alya promises if things get tough, she’ll be right by her side.

• Chloé Bourgeois, the mayor’s daughter and local queen bitch, arrives. She sees Marinette and says that she’ll go easy because of what happened last year, but she needs Marinette’s seat as she expects someone to join them. Alya begs Marinette not to do it but Marinette sighs and moves. Alya says to Chloé that even at her best she’s still a bitch. Chloé ignores it.

• Chloé receives a message from Adrien, which says ‘Sorry, plan failed.’ Chloé briefly looks sad but puts her bitch face back on.

• Alya talks to Marinette. Marinette says she cannot just deal with Chloé right now.

• The teacher comes in. Her name is Caline Bustier and she was a substitute last year. But this year she is their new full-time. Which the class is mostly happy about, since they like her.

• Ivan Bruel was a troubled boy last year. During the summer, thanks to the kindness of classmate Mylène Haprèle, he has been doing better. He wants to confess his feelings to her, appreciating how she has made him a better person.

• Lê Chiến Kim, normally a loveable jock, passes a note toward Ivan. Kim knew Ivan was a bully last year, and he tells that Mylène is too good for him and he'd better stay away from her. Ivan gets mad and he and Kim start to bicker. Mrs. Bustier takes them outside of the classroom, ask to explain themselves but both look sheepish and remain quiet. She says that it’s the first day but that doesn’t mean they can misbehave. She lets them back in class but gives them a warning.

• Ivan hadn’t spoken up about the note because he has a rep and was afraid no one would believe him, even with proof. Kim’s words are starting to get to him.

• Hawkmoth senses his first victim. He slams his cane into the ground, and in a flash of lights several butterflies come into existence. He picks one out, corrupts it with magical energy, and turns it into something called an Akuma. He then sends the Akuma Butterfly out.

• The butterfly flies towards the school and enters the note that Ivan got from Kim. A holographic butterfly mask appears over Ivan’s face. Hawkmoth introduces himself, and promises Ivan the power to get back at those whom hurt him and to get everything he wants. In exchange he demands the Miraculouses of the Black Cat and Ladybug. Ivan wonders what these Miraculous are, Hawkmoth explains that there will be two superheroes appearing soon, and they wear magical jewelry. Defeat them and take the jewelry.

• Ivan's negative emotions are amplified by Hawkmoth, pushing down his positive emotions and rationale. Ivan accepts and in a burst of dark magic, he transforms into the giant rock monster Stoneheart.

Heroes rising

• As Stoneheart rampages, the students are sent back home. However, Kim is chased by Stoneheart. Alya follows from a distance, thinking a superhero may arrive while a supervillain is active, and she doesn't want to miss it.

• Marinette arrives back home, and finds a mysterious box in her room. She opens it up, and finds two ladybug earrings. Tikki comes out…and Marinette panics, closes the box and causing Tikki to vanish and yeets it out of the room. Only for it to come back. And keep coming back no matter how many times Marinette throws it away. She just gives up, opens the box, apologizes to Tikki and asks to explain herself.

• Tikki explains that she’s a kwami, the living embodiment of a concept. Tikki embodies creativity, healing and good fortune. She is bound to the Ladybug earrings, which are part of magical jewels called the Miraculous. With it Marinette can gain the power to be a hero.

• Tikki also explains that Stoneheart is created by Hawkmoth, whom has the Butterfly Miraculous. Originally used to turn people into heroes, but in the wrong hand it creates villains. However, with her power and that of her partner, the Black Cat, they can save the day.

• Marinette is uncertain but after some prodding by Tikki, she puts the earrings on. She yells ‘Tikki, spots on!’ and transforms into Ladybug. She is at first freaked out, but being reminded about Stoneheart she gets a move on.

• At the same time Adrien has also arrived at home, finds the box with the ring and is introduced to Plagg, kwami of misfortune, plagues and destruction. And he’s a little crap. However, Adrien is immediately interested when it is mentioned he can become a superhero and save the day.

• With Plagg’s instructions Adrien says ‘Plagg, claws out!’ before the kwami had time to explain everything. He becomes the Black Cat hero, Chat Noir

Hero Time

• Ladybug and Chat Noir run into each other (kind of literally), realizing that one another is the partner their Kwamis were talking about. m

• Stoneheart chases Kim into a nearby soccer stadium, but the two heroes show up.

• The two try to fight Stoneheart, but they are still getting used to their powers. They are not working together properly and get kicked around. Luckily they are almost invulnerable when transformed. The two come up with a concrete plan, and jump back into battle. Take two.

• Chat Noir uses Cataclysm for the first time on a goal post, and as a result is unable to use it a second time. Ladybug notes that Tikki warns that their powers waste mana, and they cannot use too much since they are still new. Chat Noir admits he transformed before his Kwami could tell him that. (1)

• Ladybug uses her Lucky Charm, summoning a wetsuit, and is able to use it against Stoneheart with some creative thinking. His rocky fist is broken open, and inside the note, the Akumatized object, is revealed. The Akuma is seperated from him, and Stoneheart reverts back into Ivan.

• Alya asks for the heroes' names and introduce themselves as Ladybug and Chat Noir. Alya says she is so going to make a blog about them.

• Hawkmoth is satisfied, the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculous are out in the open, and his Akuma butterfly is still active.

The next day

• Adrien is confronted by his father. He has not been aware Adrien ran off. Nathalie has apparently covered the thing up. He reluctantly allows Adrien to go to school at the suggestion of the therapist and Nathalie. But he expects for Adrien to remain on top of his grades, his modeling job and his extracurriculars.

• Adrien mutters a soft ‘thank you’ to Nathalie, whom smiles. He also thanks the Gorilla whom just gives a thumbs up. The Gorilla then drives him to school.

• Chloé is finally happy to see that Adrien made it to the school and shows him off, though Adrien is not comfortable with how Chloé talks down to the other classmates.

• When Adrien sees how Chloé and Sabrina put gum on a seat, he tries to remove it. However, when Marinette comes in and sees Adrien picking at the gum on her seat, she gets mad at him. Adrien is too flustered to try and explain himself.

• Adrien is seated next to Nino Lahiffe. Nino asks why Adrien didn’t try to explain himself. Adrien says that Chloé is his friend though he doesn’t approve of what she did. Nino notes that is quite tame for her doing. When Adrien asked how Chloé normally is. Ninon replies ‘a she-dog.’ He also declares that Adrien needs more friends than her. Adrien says that’s why he wanted to go to school. Nino offers his hand in friendship and Adrien accepts.

• Nino says he knows Marinette and he’ll explain everything to her for him, if he’s uncomfortable. She’d listen to him. Adrien is happy with that.

• During the break, Ivan is questioned about his stint as Stoneheart by other students, which he doesn’t remember. It makes him extremely uncomfortable.

• Marinette approaches Ivan. She knew Ivan has been becoming a better person over the course of the Summer thanks to Mylène. Ivan wants to confess his feelings to Mylène but he can’t seem to bring up the courage. Marinette suggests on focusing on his talents. Ivan says he likes writing, so he could write a song for her.

• Marinette confronts Kim about antagonizing Ivan. Kim asks if Marinette remembers how mean Ivan was. Marinette says that Ivan has been getting better due to Mylène. Ivan could deserve a second chance. She gave Kim a second chance after that one prank years ago that made her cry. Kim is still ashamed that he was so stupid back then. Kim admits he should try to be nicer to Ivan.

• Shortly after Nino approaches Marinette on what happened with Adrien, whom tried to remove the gum instead of putting it on her seat. Marinette feels bad and promises to apologize to Adrien later.

• Marinette later learns the news the Akuma Butterfly has multiplied and turned people into copies of Stoneheart. Marinette feels that due to her mistake she is not worthy of the Ladybug Miraculous. She decides to renounce them and find a way to return them to whomever the owner is later.

• In class Marinette hears Alya praise Ladybug and Chat Noir, even when the Stonehearts are around. Alya says the situation is always dire at first but then the heroes turn it around. They’ll find a way to set things right.

• After class Ivan tries to confess to Mylène but accidentally scares her off. Hawkmoth senses his despair, sends the original Akuma Butterfly after Ivan againto turn him into Stoneheart once more. Stoneheart abducts Mylène and Chloé (whom was in the way).

• Alya is still intent on following Stoneheart. To save Alya from an accident caused by Stoneheart's rampage, Marinette decides to put the earrings back on and become Ladybug again.

Stoneheart, P2

• Stoneheart climbs the Eiffel Tower. Ladybug and Chat Noir approach the police. The police are weary since the heroes failed to deal with Stoneheart last time. However the heroes point out the police have no weapons that can harm Stoneheart and they are the best option against him. Also they learned from last time and will not make the same mistake again.

• Before they charge in, Ladybug wonders if she can actually do it. She felt she was trying to convince herself as much as the police officers when speaking to them earlier. Chat Noir believes in her, saying that she has shown herself to be really smart and skilled. While he was just flailing around, she came up with an actual plan. Ladybug says that unlike her, Chat never wavered. Chat says that a while back he had nearly lost hope too, for something else. But not giving up and keep belieiving, it finally happened to him. And he believes in her and knows she can make anything happen. This gives Ladybug the courage to go on.

• First Stoneheart throws Chloé with Ladybug saving the mayor’s daughter, but is caught and saved by Ladybug.

• They make it past the Stoneheart copies and climb up the Eiffel Tower. Ladybug gets a parachute with a Lucky Charm. They get Mylène away from Stoneheart, and break his rock fist to get the Akumatized object. This time, Ladybug catches the butterfly and purifies it. Ivan is returned to normal and Ladybug flies both him and Mylène down safely with her parachute.

• Now the Stoneheart copies are immobile again, Hawkmoth recalls their copied Akumas and creates a giant image of his head. He says that he just wants the Miraculous, after that he’ll vanish and never bother anyone again. The heroes can end it right here and no one else has to get hurt.

• An angry Ladybug says that this started because of Hawkmoth and they wouldn’t trust the man whom forcefully turned a kid into a monster, to obtain two magical objects of great power. That does not sound like a person whom they want to have the Miraculous.

• Chat adds to it by saying that as of today the two of them will protect Paris against Hawkmoth. They’ll never get their Miraculous, but they’ll obtain the Butterfly and end Hawkmoth's reign of terror.

• Ladybug purifies all the butterflies making up Hawkmoth’s giant head projection and then uses the Miraculous Ladybug to undo all the damage done by Stoneheart and Hawkmoth. Ladybug and Chat Noir give each other a fist bump and a ‘Pound it!’ The people for Paris cheer for their new heroes.

• Mylène finds Ivan’s note with his song written on it and thinks its beautiful. Ivan says he’s sorry if he came off as too much. Mylène says she’s sorry for running away, she is too skittish sometimes. The two finally confess their feelings and share their first kiss.

Epilogue

• Alya makes a Miracle Blog, detailing the exploits of the the newest heroes. (2) Alya also says that if it wasn’t for meeting Majestia a few years ago, Ladybug would have been her bisexual awakening. Upon hearing that, Marinette nearly chokes on her coffee.

• Marinette stands up to Chloé and takes her seat back. Chloé doesn’t thinkit worth it to fight Marinette over it. She says 'I decided to showyou one last bit of generosity. Don’t expect anything else after that.’

• Bustier speaks to Chloé after class. She had witnessed her confrontation with Marinette. Though it has resolved itself, she can’t do something like that again, pushing her weight around and looking down on others. Chloé threatens her but the teacher is not afraid. Bustier says that Chloé better cuts out the spoiled rich girl act, but Chloé insists she isn’t acting. Mrs. Bustier said she is keeping an eye on Chloé. She doesn’t want to make things difficult for her, she wants to help her. Chloé says she doesn’t need help as she runs out of the classroom. The teacher sighs as she says ‘You don’t fool me. Takes one to know one.’

• Kim apologizes to Ivan. Ivan really has changed but he didn’t give him a chance to show it. Ivan actually takes it well and accepts the apology. And gives a friendly pat on the back that nearly knocks Kim over.

• Marinette and Adrien finally catch up to each other. Adrien apologizes for the misunderstanding. Marinette apologizes for jumping to conclusions. She doesn’t like bullies and she is dealing with something…it wasn’t fair to Adrien. Adrien admits that while he thinks of Chloé as his friend, what she did was not ok. He hopes they can still be friends.

• Marinette agrees to be friends with Adrien. She gives him some pastries she didn’t finish today (due to her superhero stint distracting her). Adrien introduces himself formally as ‘Adrien Agreste’. Marinette is surprised to hear that last name, as it's the same as that of her favorite fashion designer. Adrien realizes that Marinette didn’t know his full name and didn’t know about his relation to Gabriel Agreste. In Marinette’s own words ‘I pay attention to the designer, not the models’. Adrien laughs as she may be the first person whom didn't recognize him as a model.

• Adrien gives his umbrella to Marinette so she can avoid the rain when walking home. As he enjoys the pastries given to him (and the Gorilla promising to stay quiet about him taking his cheat day early), he gets a call from Chloé. Chloé says he saw him talking with Marinette outside teh school. Adrien says she’s a nice girl and now she's his new friend.

• As Chloé pouts, Adrien asks if she doesn’t like Marinette. Chloé says she doesn’t hate Marinette, it’s just that the baker girl is the first person whom ever stood up to her. She just lashes back at her because she doesn’t want to be seen as weak. Adrien asks why Chloé acts so different with everyone else but him, so much like Audrey.

• Chloé says that without aunt Emilie, she is the only mother figure she has left. Adrien says maybe she need a new role model. He also made a few new friends today. Chloé scoffs at it, thinking it won't ever happen. She says she is happy for Adrien, whom is no longer cooped up in the Mansion and make new friends. She wants to let know she cares, which Adrien appreciates. But Adrien still insists she tries to tone down the rich bitch persona.

• As Chloé hangs up she looks at the Miracle Blog and sees Ladybug’s picture. The person whom saved her. She says that girl is amazing and she will be her greatest fan.

• Nathalie approaches Gabriel, whom has decided to not pull Adrien out of school after Stoneheart. Gabriel says its better if Adrien is out of the house once in a while so he won’t stumble upon his secrets. He has perfect control over his Heralds (3) so he can order them to stay clear of his son.

• Nathalie wonders if all this is a good idea. Gabriel reminds her of her promise, and that she wanted Emilie back too. Nathalie sighs and stands down.

• With Gabriel wrapped up in his own work again, Nathalie goes to give Adrien his schedule for tomorrow. Adrien is sad that his father hasn’t come in to check on him or even ask how his day was. Nathalie says she would like to hear about it once they are done going over the schedule. This puts a smile on Adrien's face.

• Marinette sits down behind her desk at home. And for the first time she feels inspired to design again. Soon her desk is covered with sketches. Sabine and Tom come in to check up on their daughter, and are happy that Marinette found her passion again…But they still remind her she also needs to sleep.

• Marinette apologizes to Tikki. Tikki says she’s sorry too as she may have pressured Marinette a little, without realizing it. But she is honest about Marinette being a good Ladybug. Marinette said she has forgiven and made friends with a few people today, she can do the same for Tikki as she scoops up the little Kwami and hugs her.

• Adrien talks to Plagg and saying being a hero was awesome. He asks if Plagg has to put him through some training. Plagg says he already has martial arts and fencing as extracurriculars, those should be good enough combat training for now. The kid is busy enough as it is, and wants to give him a chance to unwind. If there is something Adrien can’t figure out on his own, just come to him with questions and some nice camembert and he’ll fill the kid in on the rest.

• Marinette asks her mother to continue her martial arts training with her. Sabine is worried Marinette may try to do too much at once even if she is getting better. But with the rise of Hawkmoth it would be for the best, so Marinette can assure her own safety.

• Fu, whom has observed the two heroes over the past few days smiles and mentions that he has a very good feeling about them.

Extra scene

• In America, the United Heroez heard about the new Ladybug and Chat Noir. They contact ‘La Dama Rossa’, whom was the previous Ladybug wielder. The United Heroez are busy dealing with the American supervillains, so they ask if she can check it out instead. ‘La Dama Rossa’ agrees. She wanted to go to France to visit her son and granddaughter anyways.

1) Heroes are not on a timer in this universe, their powers instead drain their mana. If they’re out they’ll detransform. Still needs the heroes to manage their powers but they are less under pressure.

2) Both Ladybug and Chat Noir are the main character, so it is now called the Miracle Blog.

3) Heralds is what the Akumatized villains are now called. Because it is a mouthful, just calling them ‘Akumas’ may confuse them for the butterfly and they are certainly no champions of good.
