A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Jerry Matterson a and Rebecca Louise Lindsay Smith. Texie married Millard Erwin Settle on December 26, 1920. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Carmie Elam Smith, William McKinnley Smith, and Lester Avery Smith; and sisters, Martha Frances Smith Parker and Trinnie Missouri Smith Morrow.

Texie was a member of Reed Memorial Baptist Church. Texie was a member of the Good Neighbor Home Demonstration Club of Mills River. She was a grade school mother for Juanita in the first grade. She was active with her husband in church work, homecomings, children's programs, and Christmas pageants in Henderson County. She was a well known retired seamstress in her home community.

Texie had traveled throughout all the United States, Canada, and Mexico. She had navigated everyone on the roadways of WNC. She also loved to work in flowers and gardening. Texie is survived by her daughter, Juanita Settle of Mills River; and 13 nieces and nephews, Ruby Parker Propst, Carmie Parker, John Morrow, Bill Smith, Bob Smith, Doris Smith Winston, Louis Smith, Charles Smith, George Smith, Howard Smith, Lena Smith Ellison, Eloise Smith, and Sue Smith. Texie was a favorite aunt of many generations, having been a member of six living generations.

Because of her remarkable memory, she could relate many historical events that will long be remembered by the children.
