THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Sunday, March 1, 1987 Mecklenburg County Deaths Mr. George H. Bodfish, 61, of 3217 Elstree Dr. died Feb. 27, 1987, at home.

Memorial service is 2 p.m. Monday at Providence United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Harry and Bryant Funeral Home is in charge. Mr. Bodfish, native of Coleman, Mr.

Bodfish was product manager of Mr. Bodfish Compressor Accessory Division of Ingersoll-Rand and retired in 1987 after 40 years. He was a 1947 mechanical engineering graduate of Michigan State University and a registered professional engineer with the State of North Carolina. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and had served on the administrative board at his church. He was a former member, trustee and chairof Garfield Memorial United Methodist Church, Pepper Pike, Ohio.

He was a member of the Breckenridge, Masonic Lodge, No. 406, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Indianapolis, and the Al Koran Shrine Temple of Cleveland. Mr. Bodfish was active with the Boy Scouts of America and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Raintree Country Club.

Survivors are his wife, Phyllis; son, John Bodfish of Portland; daughter, Miss Evelynn Bodfish; sister, Mrs. Mildred Gross of St. Louis, Mich. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Charlotte, N.C. 28211; or to the American Cancer Society, 1928 Randolph Suite 314, Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Gallant, a native of Raleigh, was an orthodontist for Carolina Brace Manufacturing Co. for 29 years. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church and an honorary member of Indian Trail Bow Club. Survivors are his wife, Maxine; so sons, William Gallant III of Indian Trail, Douglas Gallant of Matthews; mother, Mrs.

E. FLOYD SMITH Mary Patrick Smith of 7121 Nations Ford Road, best known in Charlotte as died Friday, February 27, 1987. She was born July 4, 1902 in Fairfield County, SC, daughter of the late Robert Alexander Patrick and Mary Jane Rowe Patrick. After graduating Erskine College, she came to Charlotte and taught school at Woodlawn School and later Elizabeth School. After her marriage in 1931 to E.

Floyd Smith, she retired from teaching, but several years later went to the Children's Department of Efird's children. Department She later went Store---picking the up her work with to Mellon Company to open a Children's ment and retired from there as a Vice President some 30 years later. She has been a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church since her marriage, teaching Sunday School, working with the Pioneer Youth Groups, and serving as a life member of the Women of the Church. After the birth of her first grandchild, she got the Nursery Class started again where she continued working with the babies and toddlers for more than 20 years. Funeral services will be Sunday, March 1, 1987 at Sharon Presbyterian Church with Dr.

Martha Raedels, Associate Pastor, officiating, as-sisted by Rev. Edwin P. Graham, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Arden, NC. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Surviving are her son, E.

She collaborated with her choreographer-director husband, Herbert Ross, on such dance movies as "The Turning Point" and "Nijinsky." By LOLO PENDERGRAST Staff Writer Samuel E. Hill, a Charlotte police officer widely known as a TV safety officer and the collector of procrastinators' income tax returns, died Feb. 26, 1987, at Hawthorne Nursing Center.

He was 82. Mr. Hill, of 2333 Belmeade built a career on public safety, retiring in 1970 after 27 years as a sergeant and traffic officer who taught safety in Charlotte- burg Schools. He worked with school crossing guards at a time when sworn officers, not civilians, Mr. Hill Mr.

Hill assisted children at schools. "He well-respected by the said Capt. Roy Phillips. "He was a real clean-cut professional officer and a lot of the young officers had a real high opinion of him. He was pretty dedicated to public service and it was a genuine kind of dedication, not put on.

He lived, ate and breathed public service." Mr. Hill was also "Mr. Safety" on WSOC-TV's "Joey the Clown" show from 1960 to 1970. "Everywhere he'd go," Phillips said, "kids would be hollering at him." For 10 years, Mr. Hill was especially well-known by adults who delayed sending off their income taxes until the midnight deadline.

He was the officer who stood at the post office, then at Mint and Trade streets, and took returns from citizens so envelopes would be postmarked before midnight. "He was pretty well-respected by quite a few Charlotteans around income-tax time," Phillips said. Mr. Hill was a founder of the Charlotte Drum and Bugle Corps. He was city employee of the year twice, honored by the Junior Women's Club and a recipient of the Service Award.

A native of Atlanta County, Mr. Hill formerly supervised more than 20 branches of Standard Coffee in New Orleans. He was a member and former president of Queen City Toastmasters and in 1969 received the trophy for most impromptu. He was a member of Temple Lodge, No. 676, A.F.& A.M.; Scottish Rite Bodies; and Oasis Temple of the Shrine.

He was a former president of. the Good Fellowship Sunday school class at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. He was a deputy sheriff for two years. Survivors are his daughters, Mrs. Jane Landry of Baton Rouge, Mrs.

Evelyn Lajoie; sister, Mrs. Julia Siedell of Memphis; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. The funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at Pritchard Memorial Baptist. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
