Catawba Valley Mr. Cameron (Cam) Harrison Hayes, 82, of Taylorsville, died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at his resi- dence. Cam Hayes was born April 23, 1921 in Wilkes County to the late Fred and Reatha Hendren Hayes. He was the oldest of 13 children and was raised on the "Little Brushy Mountain" and attended school in the Hunting Creed Community at Spurgeon School in Wilkes County. Cam was drafted into the United States Army in 1942 and served during World War as a Private.

He completed basic training at Camp Croft, SC, then was transferred to Angel Island, San Francisco and then 1 to Camp Stone. He was later transferred to the peaceful Fiji Island, to New Georgia and Guadal Canal where his unit was engaged in heavy battle. On August 3, 1943, he was wounded in the leg during battle. After several months of hospitalization, he was given a Purple Heart and returned to the United States after receiving an honorable discharge. Cam married Rhoda Anderson on January 18, 1944 and they lived on a farm in the Little River Community in Alexander County.

He led an active life until the age of 80 working on the farm enjoying gardening and taking care of the cows and chickens. He was a charter member of Sugar Loaf Fire Department, a member of the DAV, Chapter 84, VFW Post 5466, a member of Little River Ruritan Club, Democrat Party and a member of Little River Baptist Church. He also enjoyed flea marketing weekly and talking to friends and playing with the great grandchildren. He always took time to stop and talk to everyone and never met a stranger. He always tried to help anyone he could.

He retired from Irene Cotton Mill of Taylorsville and then worked at Schneider Mills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a number of brothers and sisters. Surviving in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Elizabeth Herman husband, Buck and Linda DeCoteau of Taylorsville; two sisters, Vestie Johnston of North Wilkesboro and Bertha Hayes of Wilkesboro; five grandchildren, Angela Hayes of the home, Cindy Benfield husband, Terry of Conover, Jeffrey Griffin of Taylorsville, Thomas DeCoteau wife, Vonda of Hiddenite and Trish Earp husband, Darren of Taylorsville; five great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Little River Baptist Church and conducted by Revs. Jeff Chapman and Mark Robinette.

Burial followed with full military rites by DAV Chapter 84 was held in the church cemetery. Members of VFW Post 5466 served as pallbearers. Little River Ruritans and members of Little River Fire Department served as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be given to Little River Ruritans, J. L.

Captain Robert Havard fa*gan, USN, (Retired), 87, of Kingston Residence in Hickory, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at his home of natural causes. He was born in Harrisburg, PA in 1915, but in his early years and in the Navy was resident in many East Coast cities. He received degrees of BS and MS in Aeronautical Engineering from the Georgia School of Technology in 1937 and 1940 respectively.

In 1941, as an ROTC Naval Reserve Officer, he received orders to active duty to serve on a submarine stationed in Bermuda and in December, 1941, was assigned to the Navy's first wind tunnel at the Washington, DC Navy Yard. He was an aeronautical engineer and pilot in the Navy during World War serving both in Europe and the Pacific theaters and a manager of Navy aeronautical technical facilities during the 50's to 70's. He was an acknowledged computer application specialist dating back to the 1950's with Navy large- computer activities. retirement from the Navy in 1967 he was an executive at the Lockheed Aircraft maintenance activity at Kennedy Airport, NY. In 1971 he located in Orlando, FL, received a masters degree from the University of Central Florida in environmental engineering and taught this subject.

He was president of the Greater Orlando Rose Society, formed the Granada Woods Homeowner Association and the Holden Avenue Interneighborhood Council. Surviving are his wife, Jean H. fa*gan; daughters, Barbara F. Williams of Hickory, Brenda Isaacs of Mendon, VT and Beverly Lemicux of Lakeland, FL and Robert D. fa*gan of New Paltz, NY; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2003 at 2:00 p. p.m. at Kingston Residence. Burial will be at Arlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Protection Council, PO Box 1415, Hickory, NC 28603.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. fa*gan. Rachel Cline Lynch, 82, of Hickory, NC, died on May 6, 2003 at Brian Center East. Born on June 2, 1920 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Vera Wilson Cline. She was a former member of Temple Baptist Church and a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clyde Thomas Cline. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ann Phillip Barkley of Maiden, NC; one grandson and his wife, Conley Bruce Sandra Smith of Denton, NC; one granddaughter and her husband, Lisa Ann Bobby Fortenberry of Hickory; one great granddaughter, Jessica Ann Fortenberry of Hickory; and four sisters and Margie Green, brothers, in and Gwyn Sigmon, and Billie Jean and Jack McMahan, all of Hickory and Maenell and Jack Stallings of Vale, NC. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2003 at Bass Funeral Home with the Rev. Floyd Boston officiating.

Shawn Lou Teague, 27, of Hickory, formerly of Catawba, died on May 2003 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born on June 22, 1975 in Catawba County, he was the son of Johnny Everette and Sandra Sue Smith Teague.

He worked at Bassett Furniture as an upholsterer and attended St. John's Lutheran Church. Survivors include his parents, Johnny Everette and Sandra Sue Smith Teague of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Lance Teague of Catawba, NC; his paternal grandfather, Everette Teague of Conover, NC; and two uncles, Jerry Teague of Conover, NC and Teddy Smith of Maiden, NC. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2003 at Drum Funeral Home Chapel in Conover, NC with the Rev.

Reuben Merlin Thorne, 72, of Hickory, NC, died on Monday, May 5, 2003 at his residence following a period of declining health. Born in Burke County, NC, he was the son of the late Robert and Claudia Cline Thorne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Thorne. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Effie McNeely Thorne of the home; two sons, Reuben Thorne, Jr of the home and Roy "Butch" Thorne; one sister, Mary Paige of Hildebran, NC; three grandsons, Stephen Thorne, Jason Thorne, and Candice; and two great grandchildren, Brysen Thomas Thorne and Brayden Lee Thorne. funeral was held on Thursday, May 8, 2003 in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home. The Revs. Kenneth Bryant and Clyde Paige officiated. Burial followed in St.

John's Baptist Church Cemetery. Sossoman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Carolyn Barlow Woodard, 69, of Hickory, NC, died on May 2, 2003 at her residence. Born on July 8, 1933 in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late William B. and Louella Wallace Barlow.

She was retired from Brian Center in Viewmont as a Registered Nurse. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Barlow of Lenoir and two sisters, Louise Barlow Price and Sara Barlow. Survivors include one daughter, Alice Williams Fowler of Hawkinsville, GA; one son, James A. Williams of Hickory; one grandson, Michael A. King of Hawkinsville, GA; and three sisters, Mrs.

Ray Sherrill of Morganton, Mrs. James Murphy of Saluda, VA, and Mrs. Ileana Rhames of Pensacola, FL. graveside service was held on Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir. The Rev.
