Hickory Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Jasper Pinkney "J.P." 86, of Valdese, died Sunday, August 17, 2003 at his residence. Born in Catawba County on January 8, 1917, he was a son of the late Adolphus Stamey Drum and Martha Blanche Drum Drum. J.P. was a World War U.S.

Army Veteran and was a retired employee of Duke Power. He was a mason and was a member of the Lovelady Masonic Lodge in Valdese Mimosa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a shriner and was a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte and of the East Burke Shrine Club. Mr. Drum was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence Caldwell Drum; a daughter, Martha V. Drum; and a brother and seven sisters. Surviving are his wife, Miriam Monroe "Bayo" Drum of the home; a son, Kenneth H. Drum of Denver; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother, Alvin W. Drum of Maiden; and sisters, Stella Lineberger of Cramerton, and Eulalah Williams of Maiden.

Roy Lee Eddins, 72, of Hickory, died Friday, August 15, 2003 at his residence.

Born June 11, 1931 in Stanley County, he was a son of the late Frank Elsie Honeycutt Eddins. He was a member of Hickory Church of Christ and retired from Hickory Chair. He served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Ray Eddins and Paul Bradford Eddins.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara J. Eddins, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan Biscula Andrew Biscula of Hickory; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Kathy Eddins of Hickory; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and one great grandson. Wade McDonald Teague, of Newport News, VA, formerly of Hickory, died on Saturday, August 16, 2003 in Newport News. Born February 28, 1914 in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Wiley Alenander Ellen Moretz Teague. He was a former member of Fellowship Advent Christian Church and was self employed as a building contractor. John Franklin Sigmon, 69, of Claremont, died August 17, 2003 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born November 22, 1933 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Carroll Glenn Sigmon, Sr.

and Mary Brown Sigmon. He had retired from WSMP and was the former owner and operator of Perfection Furniture Company in Claremont. was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Claremont, where he served as an elder on Church Council, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, senior choir member and a member of the Lutheran Brotherhood. He also served as a Lay Leader and Chairman of the Intern Committee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Glenn Sigmon, Jr. Survivors include his wife, Arvilla of the home; daughter son-in-law, Kelley Sigmon, Tim Keisler of Conover; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff Barbara Sigmon of Granite Falls, Kurt Laura Sigmon of Hickory; four grandsons; sister and brother-inlaw, Judy Pete Sink of Claremont; sister-in-law, Maebelle Sigmon of Claremont; nieces; three step grandsons; three great nieces and two great nephews. Born April 10, 1911 in Burke County, to the late William Washington Burgess Sarah Lou Fleming Burgess. He was retired from the furniture industry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his wife, Melba Abrahams Burgess of the home; three, daughters Steven and Nestor son of Vale, Elizabeth Burns and Verndeal Shupping, both of Morganton; one Faye of Morganton; two son and daughter Roby Deward step daughters, Pat Donald Spake of Hickory and Jean David Justice of Granite Falls; ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Paul George Camp, 91, of Morganton, died Sunday, August 17, 2003 at his home.

He was a long time resident of Watkinsville, GA and moved to Morganton early this year to live with his son's family. Mr. Camp was born August 14, 1912 in Whitesburg, Ga, the Thomas Wesley Camp and Sarah Burnett Camp. Mr. Camp was a pharmacist.

He opened Oconee County's first pharmacy, Camp's Prescription Shop, in Watkinsville, GA in 1959. He owned and operated the Prescription Shop until 1979. Before 1959, he owned drug stores in Rutledge and Buchanan, GA, and was a pharmacist in Newman, GA and Washington, D.C. In 1994 the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association honored him for 50 years of service to pharmacy. He studied biology at Emory University and graduated in pharmacy from George Washington University.

He was a member of Watkinsville First United Methodist Church, and attended Grace Episcopal Church in Morganton. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Ellen Baskin of Kensington, MD and Florence Brigman of GA and AZ; and his brother, Guy Camp of Atlanta. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Helen Huckaby Camp; his four sons, Thomas G. Camp of Athens, GA, Lawrence B. Camp of Morganton, David P.

Camp of Hull, GA, and Jimmy H. Camp of Marietta, GA; daughters-in-law, Lacy, Holly, Alice, and Starr; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Watkinsville, GA. The family will receive friends at a reception after the memorial service in the church fellowship hall, and at the home of Tom and Lacy Camp, 145 Fox Trace, Athens from 2 until 4pm on Saturday, August 23.

George Carter Gardin, 92, of Carolina Rehabilitation of Burke, Connelly Springs, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 following an extended illness. Born 1 in McDowell County, NC on August 23, 1910, he was a son of the late Cleveland and Fannie Murphy Gardin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Upton Gardin; a son, Carter Gardin; and a brother, Roy Gardin. Mr. Gardin was the former owner of Harley-Davidson Motorcycle and Golf Cart Sales of Hickory. Surviving are his sister, Virginia Gardin, of Rock Hill, SC; and one niece. David Orders. Sossoman Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Mabel Smith Spencer, 99, of Hickory, died Monday, August 18, 2003 at Lutheran Home East. Born January 14, 1904 in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late C.L. Smith Lula Martin Smith.

Mrs. Spencer was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was very active, and was a homemaker. She was an expert bridge player, a member of several local bridge clubs, an avid reader and she wrote a book review column for the Hickory Daily Record. Surviving is a daughter, Mary Scott Spencer, of Chappaquiddick, MA. A private family burial service will be held at a later date.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the Spencer Family. of Hiddenite passed away unexpectedly on Friday, in Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born January 7, 1948 in Warren, PA, to the late Raymond Burton and Laura Stingle Thomas, he was an employee of Shurtape in Stony Point and retired from the United States Marine Corp, having served in Viet Nam, receiving three Purple Corp League years, Boy Hearts. He was active, in the Marine Scouts of America, Troop 45, Pleasant Township, Warren, PA for 16 years, and the Disabled American Veterans, Post 84, for 20 years.

He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, an infant son, Eugene Jay Thomas, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Kershaw Thomas, of the home; two sons, Gerald "Jerry" M. Thomas wife, Barbara of Yakima, WA and Scott W. Thomas wife, Michelle of Hiddenite; one godson, Barr Rosbourgh of Warren, PA; three granddaughters; one yet unborn grandson; and one niece.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Hiddenite and conducted by Rev. Jerry Gwaltney and Rev. Gary Jennings. The body will lie in state thirty minutes before the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by DAV, Post 84 and the Marine Corp Honor Guard.

James Terrell Kanipe, 69, of Newton, died unexpectedly Monday, August 18, 2003 at his residence. Born December 16, 1933 in Catawba County, he was a son of Grace Mozeley Kanipe and the late Worth E. Kanipe.

Mr. Kanipe was of the Lutheran faith, was owner operator of T. Kanipe Service for over 30 years, operated Mt. View Realty, and an officer of W.E Kanipe Sons Contractors. He was a graduate of Hickory High School and CVCC.

He served in the Army National Guard for six years. He was a charter member of Fairbrook Fire Dept. and Rescue, Catawba Valley, Jim Beam Bottle Specialty Club, and member of the Moose Club and American Legion. Kanipe was a NC State Licensed Plumbing Heating Contractor, Refrigeration Air Conditioning Contractor and Real Estate Broker. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Kirby Kanipe of the home; three daughters, Angela Grey Kanipe and Trudy Lynn Kanipe, both of Newton and Jill Belinda Stewart of Claremont; step daughter, Donna Bailey husband, Mark of Hickory; one stepson, Duane Bumgarner of Granite Falls; five grandchildren; mother, Grace Mozeley Kanipe of Vale; one sisters, Lennie Sever husband Tom, of Vale; three brothers, Worth A.

Hallie Fisher Kelly, 85, of Hickory, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Lutheran Nursing Home East. Born November 8, 1917 in Landrum, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry C. Polly Pierce Fisher. She was a charter member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin C.

Kelly (married 57 years); and one brother, Harley Fisher. Survivors include three sisters, Lula Teague, Cornelia Beard and Lucy Houston, all of Hickory; one brother, Gerald Fisher, of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews. Terry Richards, 47, of Catawba, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Born July 22, 1956 in Sandyville, WV, he was the son of Gilbert Mary N. Richards. He was employed at JaniTech Contract Services in Claremont and was a former employee for 18 years at Broyhill Furniture in Newton. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Clarence Mabel Nelson and paternal grandparents, Ira Maggie Richards.

Surviving in addition to his parents are one sister and brother-in-law, Sandra Roger Posten of Charleston, WV; three brothers and sister-in-law, Gary Richards of Catawba, Jerry Dee Richards of Ravenswood, WV and Ricky Richard of Catawba; three nephews; and three grandnieces. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at Faith Baptist Church and conducted by Pastor Rick Wallace and Dame Rowe. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
